The Nintendo Switch has officially sold over 100 million units worldwide. This means that Nintendo’s hybrid console has outsold both the original Playstation and the Wii, making it the most successful home device (of sorts) to come out of the company. With the Switch only halfway through its lifecycle, we can only expect more milestones.
Those milestones might come sooner than you think, following the Nintendo Switch sales landmark. Today, Nintendo announced it anticipates a further 23 million sales in the coming months, which will lead the console to leapfrog the Game Boy and Game Boy Colour in sales. While the continued shortage of components does bring into question exactly how many units Nintendo can sell, it’s clear that they don’t foresee any dramatic halt in the continued success of their device.
It’s worth pointing out that Switch sales actually fell slightly last year, by around 20%, but a big increase in digital downloads has helped the good ship Nintendo stay firmly afloat, and potentially in the best state it’s been in for years. With a stellar year of releases coming up, including the already wildly successful Pokémon Legends: Arceus, we assume the Japanese gaming giant will keep on cruising despite a lack of new hardware launches.
The President of Nintendo of America, Doug Bowser, took to Twitter to celebrate the sales announcement, and we can hardly blame him.
