This past spring developer Psyonix announced that at long last their massively popular competitive car soccer game Rocket League would finally be making its way to mobile. However, it’s not going to be a straight port of the game that everyone has been playing on PC and consoles for half a decade or so, but rather a spin-off title called Rocket League Sideswipe that has been built specifically with mobile in mind. What does that mean? Basically all the over-the-top action of the full-fat Rocket League but streamlined in just about every way imaginable. The game is now played from a side view, eliminating that 3rd dimension which can be too complicated to control on a touchscreen, and matches are now 1v1 or 2v2 only with the aim to deliver full matches in around 2 minutes. These changes should make Rocket League Sideswipe conducive to busting out for short bursts of fun, but with all the competitive aspects of online ranked play as well as the customization elements that players love so much about the big pants Rocket League. Today a new trailer was released which should give you a pretty good idea of what you’re in for with Rocket League Sideswipe.
Is it just me that keeps wanting to spell it “SideSwype” due to the 2014 puzzler of the same name from Radiangames? Anyway, alongside this trailer Psyonix is officially launching the “Pre-Season” of Rocket League Sideswipe, which for all intents and purposes sounds like a soft launch or an early access launch. Folks in the Oceania region can download and play the game starting from today on both iOS and Android. Throughout the rest of November Psyonix will continue adding new regions to this Pre-Season launch, which will lead up to a worldwide Pre-Season that is “coming soon.” There is a lot more info on crossover bonuses between Sideswipe and the full Rocket League, what the Pre-Season launch will include, and what you need to do to take part over on the game’s official blog. If you’re in the Oceania realm (which includes Australia and New Zealand which I know A LOT of our readers have App Store accounts in) you can find Rocket League Sideswipe on iOS here and on Android here. We’ll keep an eye on how this Pre-Season rollout goes and hopefully we’ll see some sort of worldwide launch before the end of the year.
